How to Choose the Perfect Wedding Cake

Along with The Dress, The Cake is one of the most important parts of your wedding, with it being a beautiful centrepiece at your reception venue and providing a reflection of the happy couple. Here at A Piece of Cake, we create stunning wedding cakes for brides and grooms in Dublin, and with more than 30 years experience in the business, we know exactly how to choose the perfect wedding cake. To ensure you receive the wedding cake of your dreams for your big day, simply follow these steps. Ask around for recommendations Start looking for your wedding cake baker around 6 months before the big day – even sooner if you’re set on a renowned bakery as some places will take bookings up to a year in advance. Word of mouth recommendations are a great way to find bakers you know have created delicious and beautiful cakes, and you can get an indication of the broad price range you can expect. Narrow down your search Once you have your recommendations, go online and check the bakers’ online portfolios. You’ll get an indication of their style and their specialities – do they work with fondant or butter cream? Are they modern or traditional? Are they experimental and do they have the resources and experience necessary to make your dream design a reality? Once you’ve narrowed it down to a few promising bakeries and arrange a consultation to get to know them. Absolutely never compromise the taste of your cake for the style; even when it comes to simple flavours, the right baker will make it taste phenomenal. Finally, make sure you feel at ease and trust your baker, they’re going to be making the most important cake of your life and have a major effect on the outcome of your wedding day. Share ideas Once you’ve found the right wedding cake designer, keep up communications with them, sending them photos of cakes that you like the look of in magazines or online. By giving your baker as much information about your wedding as possible, you’re giving them a wealth of inspiration and this can include fabric swatches of the wedding and bridesmaids dresses; colour scheme; invitations; menus and flowers. It’s at this point you’ll get to the cake tasting, and at A Piece of Cake, we recommend tasting different combinations from four or five cake and filling combinations. You’ll find that certain flavours will match a certain season and that some are great all year round. The quote you’re given for your cake will be based on the cost of ingredients, the size of the cake and the labour involved. Priced per slice, you can expect to pay more for experienced and renowned bakers. Get a contract The best way to ensure you get exactly what you want is to ensure all the details are in your contract, including the time, date and location of the wedding, and the style and flavours of your cake. Should further details be chosen or you change your mind, any reputable baker will send you an updated version of the contract and you should both be clear on what the finished cake will look like.
